Degrees offered
First degree courses in Arts and Sciences i.e. Bachelor’s degree
are normally of three or four years’ duration and are largely

written thesis. Sandwich courses are where the coursework is
accompanied by practical work. A student could either complete 2
years of college then a year of commercial training before returning
for a final year in college. Or he/she could do a 4-year courses
with 3-6 months of training involved every year. The student gets a
hands-on experience while in the learning mode. Most Universities
offer this type of education.
A Higher National Diploma (HND) is awarded by Vocational and
Technical Educational Councils. They offer a two year course in a
vocational subject. Greater emphasis is laid on work experience. It
is often seen as the first step towards a degree course as the
credits can be transferred. Vocational courses offer an opportunity
to enter the university system.
Postgraduate
study takes the form of an independent piece of research under
supervision or a taught course and leads to a variety of degrees and
awards. The taught courses normally last for one or sometimes two
years.
Completion of a Ph.D. normally takes a minimum of three years. Many
post-experience courses are also available, either leading to a
qualification or providing a refresher course for graduates wishing
to update or extend their knowledge.
Subjects available range from the traditional science, arts and
humanities to less conventional options like peace studies or music
technology, with business based courses, engineering and technology
courses being the most popular among international students.
Living Costs
Living costs vary from place to place in the entire UK. Ina city
like London, The living costs can be considerably high as compared
to those of a suburb or any other part that is not as developed as
London.
There
are various options available for living in the UK. Most of the
universities have rooms in their halls of residence where
international students can rent a room. But usually
If you accept a room in a university you would be required to sign a
building arrangement to remain in hall for the full academic year.
This policy varies with each university. Alternately you could also
take private accommodation. This could be either a British family or
sharing a flat with other students which is quite cheaper than the
halls of residence and is much preferred. Usually the Universities
have accommodation office, which can help you with accommodation
issues.
Job Opportunities
Due
to the intensive nature of the British Courses, There is often
little time for work while studying. However contrary to popular
belief, students can work for maximum 20 hours a week. Students are
entitled to work full time during the holidays. There is no
permission required for Indian students to take part time and
vacation work. Students can take up replacements or internship
placements, which are a part of the sandwich course.
Entry Requirement
British students undergo thirteen years of a pre-university
education. So excellent scores from one of the two Central Boards (CBSE
or ICSE) or their equivalent, or the first year of an Indian degree
program are therefore usually required for direct entry into a good
undergraduate program in the UK. For those who does not have these
qualifications, there is a range of foundation courses. They range
from four months to a year.
Most of the UK Universities accept
the Indian graduation system for three years for entry into most of
the postgraduate courses. An Indian bachelor degree like B.A., B.Com.,
or B.Sc. is equivalent to British Bachelor (Honours) degree, which
requires 16 years of formal education, which would mean another year
after graduation or a four year degree course like B.E., B.Tech. or
other such courses. For most of the universities a good first degree
from a leading university in India or its equivalent is essential.
