About USA
For
Indians and other Asians, Americans is the best place to gp for
higher studies. The US offers the most dynamic and adaptable
education system responsive to the needs of a multi – cultural
community from all over the world. It is estimated that every year
almost 1,00,000 Indians go abroad to pursue education and out of
these fifty percent head towards the USA. Be it Engineering or arts
or any other field for that matter, American degrees are perhaps the
most state of the art besides being practical in orientation. When
you complete your studies in America and go out into the world, you
are likely to be equipped with more than sufficient knowledge and
confidence to work in any country anywhere in the world. The
emphasis on practical implementation of a subject in real life is a
major plus point of education in America.
Education in the USA
Degrees like BA, B.Sc., BE and
B.Tech. are called graduate degrees in India, these are called
undergraduate degrees in the US. Any course other than in the field
of engineering or Medical in India can be completed within a span of
three years. It normally takes up to four years to complete a BA or
BS in the US. Degrees like B.Sc. and M.Sc. are called BS and MS
respectively.
Master’s degrees are called
graduate degrees in the US unlike the postgraduate nomenclature
typically given to them in Asia. A Master’s degree will take
another two years of study after a bachelor’s degree in the US.
Doctoral degrees are called
postgraduate degrees. Following the Master’s degree, you need to
slog for another three years before you can call yourself a Doctor
by earning a Doctorate or a Ph.D. Medicine courses usually taken
even longer and are extremely expensive.
Degrees offered:
It is said that in the US, you can
study what you want. You can study anything of your own choice and
preference. As a Common belief, in the undergraduate degrees, you
can even mingle the subjects. You can have Mechanical Engineering as
your major and can study business communication skills as a minor
subject. But this varies from university to university. A very broad
range of subjects is available in the University.
The Us has developed the
archetypal image of an academic environment where nearly everyone
participates in on-going research – not just in science and
technology, but also in arts, culture, performing arts, drama,
business and finance. Think of virtually any ticklish problem and we
bet that it is being researched in the US. And they are many a times
right. Especially when they can give you complete statistic s on
what percentage of the population gets psychologically disturbed by
listening to a clock tick throughout the day to a details thesis on
the sex life of a scorpion!
The point is that
so much research is carried out in the US that more often than not,
an international student can find financial assistance in an
American University by offering to help in its research projects –
which always need more and more assistance.
Research in the
field of technology is the most innovative, with people working from
all over the glob. It is commonly said that even if you send a
donkey to MIT he will emerge waving three new patents and will
possibly be an Astronautics expert by the time he passes out.
Living Cost:

insurance
If two or three persons are
sharing a room, you may cut down your annual boarding and room costs
to a minimum of $200 a month in a bigger city. The food costs
another $50 to $75 throughout the whole country and postage and
traveling in local buses will cost another about 40$. So in $350 or
so you can survive for a month. If you are in a smaller city or a
suburban location, this expense could be as low as $200 or $175.
Job Opportunities
Most of the US Universities have a very large pool of funds.
They are ready to shell it out but only your scores can snatch them.
Many a times even an average student with a good GRE or GMAT score
manages to get a large amount if funding or in a part. There are
many job opportunities for international students. They can work as
a research Assistants or teaching Assistant with their own
professors. They can work either in the library or in the cafeteria.
A full teaching assistantship may fetch you around $1500 whereas a
half or a quarter assistant ship may fetch you around 800 or $400
respectively. This too varies from university to university. So
comparatively it’s easy for an International student to bear the
burden of the living costs at least.
